A lubricant has to reduce friction and wear, provide protection from corrosion and soiling.

Lubricant has a decisive impact on the operation and service life of linear guides. A shortage of lubricant or the use of an unsuitable lubricant are often the cause of linear guide failure.

The choice of suitable lubricants requires careful consideration during the design, operation and servicing of linear guides. It depends above all on the operating temperature range and the environmental and operating conditions at the point of use. Consideration must also be given to the type of lubricant supply.

Most linear motion elements work with grease or oil lubrication. Oil/air lubrication is used in some cases.

This Lubrication Guide is generally valid for all STAR products. No distinction is made, therefore, between models or types. The guide is designed to provide you with fast help in choosing a suitable lubricant for your application.

STAR products can be provided with an initial supply of lubricant to ensure their smooth start-up. It is essential to ensure that these products are relubricated with a medium that is compatible with the initial lubricant.

This is an absolutely great book. At over 1000 pages it's a real opus - covering everything from ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, vector calculus, fourier analysis, complex analysis and probability. It's exceptionally well written - with plenty of clear examples, diagrams and exercises - constantly cross referencing back to the particular idea or formula that an example is employing. It presupposes only elementary calculus - and so makes an excellent university textbook to accompany study, or as a self-study book to further your maths knowledge.

About the Author

Professor JAMES W. NILSSON taught at Iowa State University for 39 years. Since retiring from Iowa State, he has been a visiting professor at Notre Dame, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, and the United States Air Force Academy. In 1962, he co-authored (with R.G. Brown) Introduction to Linear Systems Analysis (John Wiley & Sons). In 1968, he authored Introduction to Circuits, Instruments, and Electronics (Harcourt Brace and World).

Professor Nilsson received a Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Award in 1968, the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1992, and the McGraw-Hill Jacob Millman Award in 1995. In 1990, he was elected to the rank of Fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

ProfessorSUSAN A. RIEDEL has been a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University since 1981. She also holds a clinical research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a visiting professor in the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1989-90 academic year. She has received two awards for teaching excellence at Marquette, and was recognized for her research contributions with an award from the Chicago Unit of the Shriner's Hospitals.

Instrumentation comprises scientific activities and technologies that are related
to measurement. It is a link between physical, chemical and biological phenomena
and their perception by humans. Constantly evolving, instrumentation changes how
we live and plays a major role in industrial and life sciences; it is also indispensable
to the fundamental sciences. In order to be credible, all new theories must undergo a
series of experimental validations, of which instrumentation is the cornerstone.
Is curiosity a distinguishing human trait? Certainly, this characteristic leads us to

question, to understand, to explain, and finally to “know”. The more we explore, the
broader our range of investigation becomes. Since the 18th century, scientific and

Introduction
Some years ago I declared to my colleagues that I would never, ever, write a first year textbook. So what happened?
What happened was that I could find no textbooks appropriate to the 20-lecture course on circuits that I was teaching. Why? There were many reasons. Most texts were far too large, heavy and expensive: 1000 pages? 2 kg? £70? No thanks. Many were devoted exclusively to linear circuit theory, ignoring the many useful circuits that my students would later encounter. Some decided to teach some of the mathematics required: but my mathematics colleagues do that far better than I. Others decided to treat the underlying physics: I prefer to make a well-defined start with the relations imposed on currents and voltages by components and connections (otherwise, where do you stop? Back emf? Schrodinger’s equation?). Some authors are exhaustive (and exhausting): is it really necessary to teach mesh analysis (which no one uses) to students who are not going to be dedicated circuit theorists in later life? So I prepared and modified my own ‘handout’ notes which, eventually, started looking like the book I had been searching for. What you have in your hand is essentially those notes, supplemented by quite a number of worked examples which students always find useful and always request. At the end of each chapter I have included useful problems with a selection of answers. The remaining solutions can be found on a companion website at www.wiley.com/go/spence circuit. I used to teach mainstream electrical engineering undergraduates and I now teach non-EE students, specifically those pursuing a course in Biomedical Engineering. It may well be, therefore, that the book is particularly suited to ‘non-EE’ first-year students, though I suspect that it may still be useful as a supporting text for mainstream EE undergraduates.
